Our Vision and Plans
STRATEGIC PLAN OVERVIEW
2012-2015 (goals reviewed each winter, updated if necessary)Adopted by the SALTS Board on Dec. 6, 2011
Mission Statement:
To develop the spiritual, relational, and physical potential of young people through sail training, shipboard life and associated activities in a Christian environment.
Charitable Objects:
• To educate the public by providing traditional sail training and/or boat building courses, seminars and workshops.
• To operate structured programs that address specific needs of young people.
• To advance, teach and model spiritual growth and beliefs associated with the Christian faith.
• To advance education by providing sail training bursaries or other forms of financial assistance to young people from challenging life situations.
Vision Statement
We will deepen our impact on young people and generate a
sustainable, vibrant future for our crews, shipyard, and ships.
Motto: Training, by the sea, for life
Core Values: Faith, Integrity, and Community
Strategic Plan Goals:
1. We will design and build a new tall ship.
The new coastal and offshore vessel will allow us to engage 42,500 more young people through our programs over the next fifty years. The ship will be built as soon as Transport Canada gives design approval and adequate funds are raised.
2. We will secure suitable facilities for our shipyard and office.
We will relocate from 203 Harbour Road to other facilities in Victoria that meet our needs. We will find creative and efficient uses of space so that every square foot is well utilized. We will secure space to build the new ship.
3. We will increase our communications and fund development capability.
We will develop and implement strategic communications and marketing plans to raise the capital necessary to build the new ship, ensure full berths on all ships, and gain financial support for our bursary program. We will free up donation revenue for capital projects by reducing the subsidy of our operations.
4. We will enhance our management of safety and regulatory compliance.
Key issues include certification of our new and existing ships, certification of offshore and coastal crew-members, implementation of our Safety Management System (SMS), ship maintenance planning, and shipyard safety and environmental management.
5. We will have a sustainable human resource plan.
We will ensure that we have a crew-member fully trained and credentialed to replace a current Captain or First Mate should such a need arise due to illness or injury. We will recruit the talent required to allow us to achieve our strategic plan.
