Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers aged 13+ are invited to help with various tasks at our shipyard and on our ships. Tasks include:

Ongoing attention to our donated vessels.
Various projects as needed for our schooners.
Assisting with clean up on our ships at the end of a trip, see below for more details.

Shipyard Volunteer Hours:

9:30 AM through 4:30 PM Monday and Wednesday
8:30 AM through 4:30 PM Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday

If you have not volunteered with us before please call the office at 250.383.6811 prior to coming in. That way we can have someone on hand to show you around!

Volunteer Crew Openings: Summer 2012

Each summer we take on volunteer crew-members for one of our ten-day voyages. These are typically past “trainees” of our programs who have been identified by our crew-members as having the capacity to serve as volunteer crew. Our summer 2012 volunteer crew positions are now full. You are welcome to complete the online application below. Your application will be added to the waitlist for summer volunteer crew positions in case of a cancellation.

Positions include:

Watch Leader: help with evening programs, aid Watch Officers, and chaperone Trainees (requires high school graduation)
Bosun’s Mate: help with maintenance such as painting, varnishing, and ropework (usually is a former trainee with intermediate certificate)
Assistant Cook: helps the cook prepare meals for 30-40 people four times daily

Tall Ship Cleaning: March to October

We need help cleaning the tall ships after each voyage. The ships arrive at the dock around 2-3:30 pm and since arrival times vary, please call the SALTS office at 250.383.6811 after noon on the arrival day to confirm the time and location. Wear old clothing since we disinfect the ship with bleach water.
