Offshore Voyages

Every few years, SALTS conducts an offshore voyage to ports around the world. Young people aged 17-25 participate in one or more "legs" of the journey. For example, they may board in Victoria and fly home from Hawaii, or board in Tahiti and fly home from Fiji. Our most recent voyage took our ship
Pacific Grace on a tour of fifteen countries in the South Pacific and Asia from June 2007 to June 2008. Trainees learn about all aspects of navigating and sailing the ship as an active part of a "watch." They interact with diverse cultures, explore unique geographic regions, and see incredible marine life. Deep friendships are formed and lifetime memories are created. It is an unparalleled educational experience!

During the voyage, the ship's crew posts a journal on the SALTS website each day through a satellite uplink. The entire
journal of our most recent voyage is available as an unabridged PDF file here. There are amazing photos and videos posted in the galleries section of this site. Though no date has been set for our next offshore voyage, our pattern has been to conduct such a voyage every three to five years. In the mean time, our tall ships will be sailing in our coastal sailing programs.
SALTS Offshore Program Update (January 2012):
No date has yet been set for our next offshore (international) voyage, though we are eager to sail offshore again. The sail training industry in Canada is going through significant regulatory overhaul, and we are working with Transport Canada to determine what requirements we must meet related to our next voyage. We will post information about our offshore voyage plans here as it becomes available.
