Summer Trips
Sail Training for Ages 13-25
What could be better than spending summer days exploring the beautiful BC coast while learning to sail a traditional tall ship?! Our nine or ten day summer trips collectively circumnavigate Vancouver Island. Our ships are the 111’ topsail schooner Pacific Swift and the 138’ gaff rigged schooner Pacific Grace. Formal sailing instruction is provided, and no previous experience is necessary. Trips ashore and rousing mug-ups round out this life changing experience! Activities
Each trainee coming aboard is assigned to a bunk and a watch. As a member of that watch, he or she will take part in every aspect of life aboard: raising and lowering sails; galley work; bosun's chores; steering the ship and anchor watch at night. In addition to being trained as crew aboard a large sailing vessel, trainees will be instructed in the following skills:
- chart work and navigation
- rope work and knots
- theory of sailing and rules of the road
- history of sailing and small boat handling
| “I found my true personality on SALTS, and that helped me relate to people better, speak my mind, and have more fun than I think I would have had if I had stayed the way I was." |
