Vessel Volunteer Tasks
We need help cleaning the tall ships after each voyage, and maintaining them in the winter. Please contact the SALTS office at 250-383-6811 (Monday to Friday) to arrange a visit. Upcoming dates are:- October 21-23: preparing ships for winter maintenance
- October 26-30: preparing ships for winter maintenance
- November 2, 2009-March 09-2010: ship winter maintenance
Shipyard Volunteer Tasks
The shipyard is looking for volunteer help with the following tasks:
- Clean and tidy donated boats on deck and below
- Refurbishing the forklift shed
- Organize lumber storage
- Restoration work on 14' Whitehall
- Tall ship maintenance
Note: Please keep in mind that this list will be updated weekly so some tasks listed may already be completed.
Volunteer Crew Openings
Each summer we take on volunteer crew-members for one of our ten-day voyages. These are typically past “trainees” in our program who have been identified by our crew-members as having the capacity to serve as volunteer crew.Positions include:
- Watch Leader: help with evening programs, aid Watch Officers, and chaperone Trainees (requires high school graduation)
- Bosun’s Mate: help with maintenance such as painting, varnishing, and ropework (usually is a former trainee with intermediate certificate)
- Assistant Cook: helps the cook prepare meals for 30-40 people four times daily
