What People Are Saying

Trainees who sail with us are asked to complete an online feedback survey, and one of the questions asks how they grew personally during the voyage. Here are some actual responses, which are typical of the hundreds of responses we receive each year.

"During the trip I got to know a lot of people that I didn't really talk to before. I also learned a lot about the boat and how it works. Running the ship was hard work... It took teamwork from all of the people on the boat."

"I became more aware that every one of my classmates was having problems and I wasn't the only one. I grew closer to my classmates and my class literally changed on how we acted towards each other."

"I grew up on boats in the ocean as a kid and my dad passed away 5 years ago. I so wanted to do this trip in memory of him. It gave me such a love for the ocean again. Going into the bays brought back lots of memories. The challenges and stories from the crew were challenging in it made me think about life choices."

"I grew with confidence in the things that I did, because at first I didn't think I could sail the ship, or finish the oral exam, but I managed to get through."

"I came expecting to have the worst time in my life. I left not wanting to ever go home. SALTS changed my life. I felt at home there. It really felt like a family. I would give anything to go back to that week. I was the happiest I've ever been, and I don't understand why! Thank-you so much!!!"

"During lunch and the discussions I learned about some relation-related issues and why the other person did that and why I felt the way I did."

"I created a new friend on this trip that I would have never thought we would have became friends."

"While aboard the Swift, I felt that I could be open and honest with the people around me, and not worry about being judged. The opinions and views of the people I knew were thrown away, and I had the freedom of expressing what I really was inside."
