All-Adult Trips, Cost, & Registration

Coastal vistas. Deep community. Classic tall ships. Adventure awaits!

Join us on a SALTS adventure - a multi-day sailing for adults!

Experience a taste of what our youth programs are like, or re-live your own memories from time spent on board.  Bask in the atmosphere of the BC coast, form intentional community, work with your hands, take time to rest and reflect, eat food prepared by our onboard cook, and carve out this time away from the pressures of life on shore. Expect to be an active part of the crew throughout the voyage - setting sails, hauling lines, navigating the Salish Sea, and so much more!

Fitness Requirements

Everyone who sails with SALTS is considered a "trainee" and will take an active part in sailing the ship. Although no previous experience is necessary, physical agility and mental alertness are essential for safe participation. Please review our Fitness Requirements to be sure that a SALTS voyage is a suitable activity prior to registering.

Accommodation

The ship has two main areas below deck called the "fo'c'sle" and the "hold" (which is open to the galley). These multipurpose areas each have 15 bunks (there are no private berths), a table for dining, and a single occupancy bathroom (head) with sink and toilet. There are no showers on board, but swimming and bathing in the ocean is an option.

Life on Board

No prior sailing experience is needed - just arrive ready to learn! Participants will be involved in every aspect of life aboard a tall ship, including raising and lowering sails, navigation, steering the ship, washing dishes, swabbing the deck, and anchor watch at night. There will be lessons on knots, chartwork, rules of the road, and points of sail, as time permits. Row the ship's dories to local marine parks and beaches. "Mug-up" in the evening is a time of singing and entertainment while enjoying a warm drink and freshly baked treats.

SALTS is an independent, non-denominational Christian-based charity, operating in a multi-faith community in which our Society members, donors, volunteers, and program participants come from all backgrounds, beliefs, sexual orientations, gender identities, and walks of life. Our programs allow for friendly and open dialogue about many points of view while seeking to find shared values. During SALTS voyages, a crew-member typically says a short prayer for safety before departing the dock and ends each night with a prayer of thanks. These moments can be used for silent reflection and gratitude as each person chooses. We may sing a “grace” before meals (e.g. “Johnny Appleseed”) or ask participants to share what they are thankful for. We sing at evening mug-up, and our songbook contains hundreds of options including top 40 hits (current and past), sea shanties, and spirituals like Amazing Grace. We regularly receive feedback about the positive and transformative experiences young people have on board through the close community that forms and the challenges they overcome by living and working together at sea.

Frequently Asked Questions

What about medications?
Our standard Medications Policy has been created to support youth sailing. You will still need to report any that you will be bringing aboard (prescription, over the counter, supplements, etc.), however as you and all of your fellow trainees are adults, it is your decision how you handle and manage your medications. It is important to know that your medications are subject to a damp environment, potential damage when bags are moved around in your bunking area and possible spillage when opening containers on a moving boat. So, if you choose to not provide a spare second set of medications to our Primary First Aid Officer to hold, ensure you have taken the appropriate precautions when packing them.

Will there be coffee?
As our trainees are primarily youth, we don't typically provide coffee. However, as all of the participants will be adults and many are accustomed to starting their day with some caffeine, our wonderful cooks will make that available during the breakfast meal.
